For example, when someone in Cardiff (for example) wants to hire a skip and goes to Google to find a supplier (as nearly 1000 people did last month) they might initially type in ‘skip hire’ as their search query. They then find that all the search returns is a list of national skip hire brokers and not a single local business so they invariably modify their search by adding their local town or city name. Try it now and take a look at the results page for ‘skip hire cardiff’. Here is a snapshot.
Firstly, it is VITAL to be on the first page of these results.
Google tells us that it has indexed 84,700 web pages that contain this search term and it does its best to return the most relevant of these pages first.
These days there are three places where a website might appear on Page 1 of the results:
1. The ‘Sponsored links’ (paid adverts) at the very top of the page and in
the right-hand margin.
2. The ‘Local business results’ alongside the map (our site is at #2).
3. The natural or ‘organic’ search results starting below the map (our site
is at #1).
We specialize in driving business via options 2 and 3.
Why don’t we use the ‘Sponsored links’ or ‘Adwords’ advertising?
Two main reasons:
Firstly, more & more people are realising that these are ‘paid’ adverts and are simply ignoring them.
Secondly, the way Google’s Adwords system works is basically an auction with advertisers outbidding one-another to get their adverts to appear higher on the results page – preferably in one of the three spots above the map.
In the Cardiff area just now, Google’s own tool tells me that to get a top 3 position in the sponsored links will cost the advertiser a minimum of £1.81 every single time a prospective customer clicks on an advert and is routed to their website. Many areas already cost much more than this. Be aware that this cost is simply to get a customer to your website, it can take up to ten ‘clicks’ before any of these prospective customers actually picks up the phone and calls you.
This means you’ve spent £18.10 to get a single telephone enquiry! As more and more firms start to use Adwords and there is more competition for the top spots, the price per ‘click’ is going to be driven even higher, to the point where there is simply no profit left. Also, in practice it’s all-but impossible to achieve the cost that Google predicts. Because they apply their secret ‘quality score’ formula to each advert, everyone ends up being asked to pay more than their tool predicts. I know of one large skip hire firm near London who were spending £2,500 per month on Adwords and receiving 100 phone calls on the dedicated line they were using for this. That’s £25 per enquiry!
In the beginning..
